Stonewall – A look behind the riots

Inspired by the incredible true story of the unsung heroes whose courage broke down walls, Stonewall is streaming for free on wedotv.

The movie concerns a young man's political awakening and coming of age during the days and weeks leading up to the Stonewall Riots which in turn helped move forward the gay rights movement.

The 1960s were a time of terrible ignorance and misconceptions towards the LGBTQ+ community and Stonewall brings these terrible times vividly to life. By focusing on Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) the movie has someone the audience can connect with and witness his struggle for acceptance and above all the right to love someone of the same sex. It is truly moving with some moments that will shock many with the treatment of homosexuals in this time of persecution.

Directed by Roland Emmerich, a man normally associated with big-screen blockbusters, the movie is an unflinching look at a shameful time in history. The script from American playwright Jon Robin Baitz is peppered with emotion and rawness which helps the audience to fully understand the truly horrific time the film is set in.

The whole cast deliver strong performances, look out for a film-stealing performance for Ron Perlman, and give the movie an air of authenticity and heart.
