The Professor - american comedy-drama about the rules of life and when they do not matter anymore

 Goodbye rules, goodbye inhibitions, hello life. The Professor is here. It's an American comedy-drama directed by Wayne Roberts. The film premiered at the Zurich Film Festival on 5th October 2018 and it was released on 17th May 2019, distributed by Saban Films and DirecTV Cinema.

The film stars Johnny Depp, Rosemarie DeWitt, Danny Huston, Zoey Deutch, Ron Livingston, Devon Terrell, and Odessa Young.

The plot revolves around Richard Brown(Johnny Depp) a college English professor, who is diagnosed with late-stage cancer on his lungs that have spread through his body. The doctor gives him six months to live, which can be extended to 12-18 months with aggressive cancer treatment. The news devastates Richard, who in turn becomes abusive towards himself verbally and wanders around the campus and town.

Richard comes home to tell the terrible news to his wife Veronica (Rosemarie DeWitt) and only daughter Olivia (Odessa Young). Before he even opens his mouth at the dinner table, Olivia comes out and declares that she is a lesbian and has a lover. Veronica tells her that she's going through a phase, but Olivia storms out of the room angry at her mother for lack of support. Veronica then tells Richard that he?s a poor husband and admits that she's having an affair with the dean at the college where Richard teaches English. Richard never even gets to announce the ill news to his family.

The next day, Richard begins his unorthodox approach with his students. He urges them to live life to the fullest and begins to trim his class of students that are there for the easy grade. Half the classroom leaves. Among the students that form the core of Richard's new class is the dean's niece, Claire(Zoey Deutch) who admires Richard.

He asks for a sabbatical from the college but is refused by his friend Peter Matthew(Danny Huston) because of the short notice. Richard explains Peter his situation, and Peter promises that he will try his best.

The illness is the moment in his life when Richard decides to start living his life to the fullest. He starts drinking, smoking, taking drugs, and talking straight to the people around him. He embraces his demise and in turn ignites his inner spirit. He mends the broken relationship in his family and close friends. He approaches life from angles that could not have been reached before.
